Cocktail Maximalism: A New Era of Theatre and Experience

By DRINKS.GR · August 21, 2026 · 2 min read

According to The Spirits Business, the global cost-of-living crisis is prompting a shift in cocktail culture, moving away from the minimalist aesthetics of the past decade. Bartenders are now leaning towards maximalist cocktails, which provide a greater sense of value and experience for patrons.

In the 2010s, cocktail presentations were often stark and minimalist, focusing on elegance and simplicity. However, as customers view visits to cocktail bars as rare luxuries, they are craving more theatricality in their drinks. Mark Low, lead creative at Mr Lyan Studio, notes this trend, stating, “There’s definitely been a move away from the minimalism and Scandi chic vibes of the past 10 years.”

The 2026 edition of the Bacardi Cocktail Trends Report supports this observation, predicting that ‘more is more mixology’ will dominate the global cocktail scene this year. The report highlights that over 76% of participants in the Bacardi Global Consumer Survey value memorable experiences, with bars embracing edible pearls, metallic garnishes, and dramatic presentations.

As venues from Dubai to Las Vegas showcase extravagant designs, there is a clear demand for cocktails that are not just drinks, but experiences. In a world recovering from burnout, people desire moments of joy and celebration in their glasses.

The cyclical nature of aesthetics in food, design, and cocktails means that this shift towards maximalism is not just a trend but a response to the current economic climate. As consumers seek small luxuries, bartenders are ready to deliver cocktails that are as much about the experience as they are about the taste.
