Women Prefer Wines from Female Winemakers, Study Shows

By DRINKS.GR

According to WSU Insider, a new study highlights the growing trend of women choosing wines produced by female winemakers. This research indicates that messages such as β€œproudly made by a woman winemaker” significantly enhance women’s intentions to purchase these wines. The study, conducted by Washington State University and Auburn University, found that the presence of feminine design elements, such as flowers on the label, further boosts these purchasing intentions.

With women accounting for 59% of all wine purchases in the United States, this finding is crucial for the wine industry. Christina Chi, a professor at WSU and coauthor of the research, emphasizes that the identity of the winemaker plays a pivotal role in shaping the brand’s image. Despite this, many female winemakers often hesitate to showcase their names on labels, fearing potential bias in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Chi suggests that female winemakers should embrace their visibility and use it as a marketing strategy. By prominently featuring statements like β€œwomen-made wine” on labels and in retail displays, they can connect more effectively with their target audience.

The research, published in the International Journal of Hospitality Management, builds on previous studies that show women are more inclined to purchase wines with feminine cues on the labels. This evidence underscores the importance of representation in the wine industry and the potential for female winemakers to thrive.
