Renaissance and Challenges in Greek Wine Production

By · March 2, 2026

The Greek wine market is undergoing a significant transformation, as wine imports in 2025 saw an increase of 18.85% in volume, reaching 30,212 tons. These imports amounted to a value of €80.6 million.

The main countries of origin for the imports are Italy, Spain, and Bulgaria, which contribute to the increase in quantities of cheaper European wines. For the second consecutive year, imports in volume exceeded exports, with 30,291,109 kilograms compared to 28,201,726 kilograms.

Spain records the largest increase in quantity, while France has returned to the top in terms of value of intra-community deliveries. This increase in imports is attributed to low domestic production, reduced availability of Greek wines, and a lack of adequate controls.

Despite the contraction in consumption and lower market activity, 2025 sees a new increase in wine imports. The figures indicate that the market continues to adapt to the new conditions, with imports expected to play a crucial role in the future of Greek gastronomy.
