Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production Forecasted

By · May 6, 2026

According to the latest EU agricultural outlook, wine consumption and production in the European Union are on a downward trajectory, expected to decline through 2035. This trend reflects a significant structural change in the largest wine-producing region in the world rather than a mere temporary dip.

The report forecasts a yearly decline of approximately 0.9% in EU wine consumption, which would bring the per capita consumption down to around 19.3 liters by 2035. This marks a stark decrease from nearly 30 liters recorded in the early 2000s, influenced by evolving lifestyles, health concerns, and regulatory pressures that are reshaping drinking habits across the continent.

Particularly, younger consumers are increasingly opting for lower alcohol intake, a trend further supported by national policies advocating for moderate alcohol consumption for health benefits. Additionally, competition from alternative beverages is intensifying, further challenging the traditional wine market.

As vineyards are being uprooted in response to these shifts, the future of wine in the EU appears to be one of adaptation and transformation.
