Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production Forecasted

By · April 30, 2026

The European Union’s wine landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with projections indicating a steady decline in both consumption and production through 2035. This trend marks a fundamental shift rather than a temporary setback for the world’s leading wine-producing region.

According to the latest EU agricultural outlook, wine consumption is anticipated to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, resulting in a per-capita intake of around 19.3 liters by 2035. This figure represents a notable drop from nearly 30 liters in the early 2000s, reflecting evolving lifestyles, health concerns, and regulatory pressures that are reshaping drinking habits across Europe.

One of the driving forces behind this decline is the shift in preferences among younger consumers, who are opting for lower alcohol options. Additionally, national policies advocating for moderate alcohol consumption to promote public health are further reinforcing this trend.

As vineyards are pulled out and traditional consumption patterns change, the EU wine industry faces a challenging future. Stakeholders will need to adapt to these shifts to sustain the region’s rich wine heritage.
