The latest EU agricultural outlook reveals a concerning trend for the wine industry, forecasting a steady decline in both consumption and production of wine across the European Union until 2035. This decline is attributed to a fundamental shift in consumer behavior, particularly among younger drinkers who are increasingly turning away from alcohol.
According to the report, EU wine consumption is projected to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, leading to a per-capita consumption rate of around 19.3 liters by 2035. This marks a significant drop from the nearly 30 liters consumed in the early 2000s. Factors such as changing lifestyles, health concerns, and evolving policy frameworks are reshaping drinking habits throughout the region.
Younger consumers are particularly noted for their reduced alcohol intake, influenced by national policies advocating for moderate drinking for health reasons. This shift is compounded by increasing competition from alternative beverages, which are capturing the attention of the younger demographic.
As vineyards face the prospect of being uprooted and traditional wine culture encounters challenges, the future landscape of the EU wine market appears to be on a transformative path.
