Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production Forecasted

By · May 14, 2026

The latest agricultural outlook for the European Union paints a concerning picture for the wine industry, predicting a steady decline in both consumption and production through 2035. This trend reflects a profound structural change rather than a temporary setback for the world’s largest wine-producing region.

According to the report, EU wine consumption is anticipated to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, resulting in a per capita consumption of around 19.3 liters by 2035. This marks a significant drop from the nearly 30 liters recorded in the early 2000s, influenced by evolving lifestyles, heightened health awareness, and regulatory pressures.

One of the key factors contributing to this decline is the shift in preferences among younger consumers, who are increasingly opting for lower alcohol options. Additionally, national policies aimed at promoting moderate alcohol consumption for health reasons are further solidifying this trend. The report highlights that competition from alternative beverages is also playing a role in this evolving landscape.

As the EU wine sector grapples with these challenges, stakeholders will need to adapt to the changing market dynamics to sustain their presence in the global wine arena.
