Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production Forecasted

The European Union’s wine industry is facing a significant transformation, with projections indicating a steady decline in both consumption and production through 2035. This trend marks a fundamental shift rather than a temporary setback for the world’s largest wine-producing region, as outlined in the latest EU agricultural outlook.

According to the report, EU wine consumption is expected to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, resulting in a per-capita consumption of around 19.3 liters by 2035. This figure represents a notable drop from nearly 30 liters recorded in the early 2000s. The decline is attributed to evolving lifestyles, growing health consciousness, and various policy initiatives aimed at promoting moderate drinking.

Younger generations are increasingly opting for lower alcohol consumption, influenced by national health policies that advocate for moderation. This shift is further compounded by competition from alternative beverages that appeal to changing tastes.
