Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production Forecast

By · May 5, 2026

The latest EU agricultural outlook reveals a concerning trend for the wine industry, predicting a steady decline in both consumption and production throughout the European Union until 2035. This decline is not merely a temporary fluctuation but rather a significant structural shift in one of the world’s largest wine-producing regions.

According to the report, EU wine consumption is expected to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, leading to a per-capita consumption rate of about 19.3 liters by 2035. This marks a stark contrast to the nearly 30 liters consumed per person in the early 2000s, reflecting a broader transformation in drinking habits influenced by lifestyle changes, health concerns, and evolving policy frameworks.

Particularly among younger demographics, there is a noticeable trend towards reduced alcohol consumption. National initiatives promoting moderate drinking for health reasons are further solidifying this shift. Additionally, competition from alternative beverages is intensifying, contributing to the overall decline in wine’s popularity.

As vineyards are increasingly uprooted in response to these trends, the future of wine production in the EU appears uncertain. Stakeholders in the industry must adapt to these changes to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving market.
