According to the latest EU agricultural outlook, wine consumption and production within the European Union are projected to experience a continuous decline until 2035. This trend reflects a significant shift in consumer behavior rather than a mere temporary setback for the world’s largest wine-producing region.
The report forecasts a yearly decrease of approximately 0.9% in wine consumption, which would reduce per capita consumption to about 19.3 liters by 2035. This figure marks a stark decline from nearly 30 liters recorded in the early 2000s, driven by evolving lifestyles, health concerns, and regulatory pressures that are reshaping drinking habits across the continent.
Younger generations are increasingly opting for lower alcohol consumption, influenced by national policies that advocate for moderation due to health reasons. This shift, coupled with rising competition from alternative beverages, is further solidifying the downward trend in the wine market.
