Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production Forecasted

By · May 6, 2026

The European Union is poised to experience a significant decline in wine consumption and production, continuing through 2035. This trend, highlighted in the latest EU agricultural outlook, suggests a fundamental shift in the wine market rather than a temporary setback.

According to the report, EU wine consumption is projected to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, leading to a per-capita consumption of around 19.3 litres by 2035. This marks a stark contrast to the nearly 30 litres recorded in the early 2000s, reflecting evolving lifestyles, health concerns, and regulatory pressures that are reshaping drinking behaviors across the continent.

One of the key factors contributing to this decline is the shift in preferences among younger consumers, who are increasingly opting for lower alcohol options. National policies advocating for moderate alcohol consumption for health reasons further reinforce this trend, as the report indicates.

Additionally, competition from alternative beverages is intensifying, posing further challenges to the traditional wine market. As vineyards are uprooted and production scales back, the EU’s position as the world’s largest wine-producing region faces unprecedented changes.

As the landscape of wine consumption evolves, stakeholders in the industry must adapt to these new realities to remain relevant in a shifting market.
