Long-Term Decline Predicted for EU Wine Consumption and Production

By · May 4, 2026

The latest EU agricultural outlook reveals a concerning trend for the wine industry, predicting a steady decline in both consumption and production of wine across the European Union until 2035. This decline represents a significant shift in the market rather than a temporary setback.

According to the report, EU wine consumption is projected to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, resulting in a per-capita consumption of around 19.3 liters by 2035. This marks a notable drop from nearly 30 liters in the early 2000s, reflecting broader changes in lifestyle, health consciousness, and regulatory pressures that are reshaping drinking habits.

Younger consumers are increasingly opting for lower alcohol alternatives, and national policies promoting moderate drinking for health benefits are further solidifying this trend. Additionally, competition from other beverages is intensifying, leading to a re-evaluation of wine’s position in the market.

As vineyards are pulled out and production decreases, the EU wine sector must adapt to these evolving consumer preferences to remain relevant in a changing landscape.
