Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production

By · May 3, 2026

The latest agricultural outlook for the European Union reveals a concerning trend: both wine consumption and production are set to decline steadily until 2035. This shift indicates a deeper, structural change in the wine industry rather than a mere temporary dip.

According to the report, EU wine consumption is projected to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, leading to a per capita consumption of around 19.3 liters by 2035. This marks a significant reduction from nearly 30 liters recorded in the early 2000s. The decline is attributed to evolving lifestyles, increased health consciousness, and regulatory pressures that are reshaping drinking habits throughout the region.

Particularly among younger consumers, there is a noticeable shift towards lower alcohol consumption. National policies aimed at promoting moderate drinking for health reasons are further solidifying this trend. Additionally, the wine industry faces increasing competition from alternative beverages, which are becoming more popular among the younger demographic.

As vineyards are uprooted and production decreases, the future landscape of the EU wine market is poised for significant transformation.
