Long-Term Decline in EU Wine Consumption and Production Predicted

By · May 2, 2026

The European Union’s wine landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, with both consumption and production anticipated to decline steadily until 2035. This trend, highlighted in the latest EU agricultural outlook, suggests a structural shift rather than a mere fluctuation in the market.

According to the report, EU wine consumption is projected to decrease by approximately 0.9% annually, leading to a per capita consumption of around 19.3 liters by 2035. This marks a significant drop from nearly 30 liters recorded in the early 2000s, as evolving lifestyles, health concerns, and regulatory pressures reshape drinking habits across the continent.

Younger generations are increasingly opting for lower alcohol consumption, influenced by national policies advocating moderation for health benefits. This shift is compounded by competition from alternative beverages, further challenging the traditional wine market.

As vineyards are pulled out and production decreases, the EU faces a critical juncture in its wine industry, necessitating innovative approaches to engage a new demographic of consumers.
