The Renaissance of Greek Wine: Biodynamic Cultivation and Community

By · April 26, 2026

The Greek winemaking industry is undergoing a renaissance, with new approaches highlighting biodynamic cultivation and local production. In Spata, winemaker Dimitris Georgas has been applying biodynamic methods since 2002, aiming to cultivate wines that reflect the soul of the vineyard and the unique geology of the area.

Georgas’s philosophy, along with that of other winemakers who follow similar practices, focuses on low intervention and the connection of wine to its environment. This approach has created a new generation of wines that are fresh, vibrant, and full of flavors, showcasing local varieties.

On April 20th, the team from Wine Kiosk organized its first Salon & Symposium in Athens, where winemakers shared their stories and flavors with the community. This event highlighted the importance of community around wine, creating a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences.

Furthermore, Retsina, a wine with a 2,000-year history, continues to remain popular, offering a taste of Greece’s tradition and cultural heritage. The recognition of Greek wines, such as Assyrtiko from Santorini, has expanded internationally, where consumers appreciate their quality and authenticity.

The growing demand for Greek wines in countries like Australia underscores the shift towards lighter, fresher, and vibrant wines that align with modern food and wine culture. The new generation of winemakers is described as artists who create wines with care and love.

Overall, modern Greek winemaking is revolutionizing, blending tradition with contemporary approaches and promoting a new era for Greek wines.
